What the Patriots' new offensive tempo says about the plan
Tempo is not just about snapping the ball quickly. For New England, it can be a way to simplify pictures for the quarterback, keep defenses from substituting, and create cleaner answers before the snap.
The most encouraging sign would be a menu of easy completions that keeps the offense on schedule. That is how a young quarterback gets rhythm without needing every play to become a rescue mission.
If the Patriots pair tempo with a real run threat and better protection rules, the offense can start to look far more modern without losing its physical edge.
